Accessibility

Hadley is committed to making this holiday card store accessible to everyone. The site is designed to support keyboard navigation, screen readers, text resizing, strong contrast, and reduced motion — because Hadley’s own mission is helping older adults adjust to vision loss, and a store that isn’t accessible would work against the cause it exists to support.

The standard we build to

We work to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the widely used standard for web accessibility, across the whole store — there is no separate “accessible version” to opt into. Text contrast goes further: normal text is designed to meet the stricter AAA level (at least 7:1), and large text at least 4.5:1, everywhere we can manage it.

What we’ve built in

  • Every page can be navigated by keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline on the control you’re on and a “Skip to main content” link at the very start of the page so keyboard users can bypass the header and jump straight to the page’s content.
  • Browsing, adding cards to your cart, and checking out are all built to work with a screen reader, with clear labels, live announcements when your cart changes, and a logical reading order.
  • A Display Options panel in the header lets you turn on larger text, increased contrast, and reduced motion, and your choices are remembered the next time you visit.
  • Motion respects your system’s reduced-motion setting as well as the Display Options toggle above — animations shorten or stop accordingly.
  • Images carry descriptive alt text, or are hidden from screen readers when they’re purely decorative.

The 3D card preview

The interactive preview that lets you fold open the card on-screen is a visual extra, not the only way to see what’s inside. Its animated panels are hidden from screen readers; in their place, the same front, inside, and back content — including your own personalized message where one applies — is provided as ordinary text that a screen reader reads straight through, no interaction required. The preview itself still works from a keyboard: it’s a single control with a clear label describing what it currently shows, and pressing Enter or Space opens it to the next stage.

Known limitations

Checkout uses Square’s own embedded payment form to take card details. We build our checkout page around it and label its fields clearly, but the payment form itself is Square’s interface, not ours, so some behavior there is outside our control. If you run into trouble at that step, ordering by phone (below) is a full alternative. We’re not aware of other accessibility barriers on the site, but we know we won’t always catch everything — please tell us if you find one.
